The polar night occurs when the night lasts for more than 24 hours and the sun is more that 6° below the horizon. This only occurs inside the polar circles. The opposite phenomenon, when the sun stays above the horizon for a long time is called the polar day, or midnight sun.

Mørketid er et fenomen som opptrer når natten varer mer enn 24 timer. Dette skjer bare nord for den nordlige polarsirkelen og sør for den sørlige polarsirkelen. Polarnatt er en periode over minst et døgn i mørketiden da det er fullstendig mørkt og sola er mer enn 6° under horisonten.
